Spending the day here one of the city’s attractive hotels will allow you to explore the local colourful markets, craft shops and restaurants. A visit to the Genocide Memorial Centre is a must. The memorial of the 1994 genocide is an important part in understanding Rwanda’s history and how they have since healed as a nation.
DAY 2-6: AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
You will leave the city and heading for the gorgeous Akagera National Park in Eastern Rwanda, bordering Tanzania. This stunning area of low lying mountains, plains, wetlands and a dozen lakes. Spend your days here on game drives with an experienced guide, spotting some, if not all of the big 5 that reside in the park. Perhaps a boat trip on Lake Ihema or even a night game drive will be on the cards.
Day 6-8: VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
Time to head to the famous Volcanoes National Park in the far northwest of Rwanda, home to the endangered Mountain Gorilla. Often safari goers come to Rwanda solely for this destination, but the country has a lot more to offer to Safari-goers. Spend a day on a Gorilla trek, where you will hike the mountains with an experienced guide looking for one of the families. Once you find them you will spend an incredible hour or so watching them interact with one another - a breathtaking, once in a lifetime experience for sure. The rest of your time in Volcanoes can be spent relaxing in your gorgeous mountain lodge or further trekking looking for the endemic and endangered Golden Monkeys.
Day 9: Back to KIGALI
Time to head back to the capital after a unique, fun and exciting Safari experience in one of Africa’s safari gems that is Rwanda. Spend the day relaxing at the hotel in Kigali before your flight, or even spend another night in the city to reflect on your incredible time in this small yet mighty country.
